Beyond gaming

In the Applied Technologies department, we create the non-game technologies behind the PlayStation platforms.

This work crosses several key areas, including platform security, video streaming, and other technologies used by our partners and internal teams. We also develop applications that are released to consumers.

The department is made up of four teams – Video Services, Application Development, and our Video Playback, Client Security and DRM Team.

Video Services Team

The Video Services team develops technologies to support video streaming on PlayStation platforms.

This includes development and support of a streaming video playback engine and a WebKit-based framework to enable HTML5 web application development on PlayStation.

As of 2016, more than 100 video services have used this technology.

Video Services Team Leader

After graduating in Computer GameTechnology at the University of West Scotland, David joined Euro R&D to work on VidZone, our first streaming video service.

Since then, he’s helped develop key non-game applications, including MUBI for PS3 and Facebook for PS Vita.

Today, he leads the team that develops WebMAF and libjscript – two key technologies used in third-party applications like BBC iPlayer, IGN, 4oD and Blinkbox.

When he’s not developing applications (or babysitting his daughter), David enjoys cooking and sightseeing in the UK.

Application Development

The Application Development Team has worked on a number of applications for PlayStation consumers, including:

  • PlayTV for PS3
  • Facebook for PS Vita
  • SEN Live Events (Pay Per View events) for PS4
  • UEFA Champions League Final in VR – Cardiff 2017 for PSVR

Advanced Engineer

Andy first joined Euro R&D in June 2014 as a student, where he helped launch TV From Sky, Now TV, and season one of the PlayStation F.C. app for PS4. He also managed to get his hands on some early PSVR prototypes by giving demonstrations to developers.

After completing his Games Technology degree, he returned to R&D to work on season 2 of the PSFC application.

Today, Andy works on creating non-game VR applications and enjoys regularly taking part in company hackathons. He enjoys discussing R&D topics which have led to several patent filings.

Video Playback, Client Security & DRM Team

Our Video Playback, Client Security & DRM team handles video playback in our SDK, giving developers high quality local and streaming video playback for their titles. The team also produces DRM and security features for PlayStation formats, including an implementation of PlayReady and AES encryption.

Finally, the team provides client security tthrough monitoring, auditing and device penetration testing.

Principal DRM Engineer

A German-Aussie-Pom hybrid, Micha tends to identify himself with whichever country suits his argument best. But while he loves to explore the world on his motorbike, moving to England and working in gaming is his childhood dream come true.

Micha originally joined Euro R&D as a Network Engineer, working with the earliest Network Service for PS2 – which would later become the PSN.

Today, Micha is responsible for porting and securing the underlying DRM solutions used to protect video content on PlayStation platforms.

Music Services Team

The Music Services team supports partner music applications and services on PlayStation.

These currently include Spotify & TuneIn.
